Ealing

From its humble 12th century beginnings as a rural settlement Ealing has grown into a bustling suburban borough. Ealing’s growth was fuelled by the arrival of the railway in 1830. The borough owes much of its architecture to the Victorians who were also responsible for the impressive town hall and Ealing’s leafy avenues and common.

Visitors to Ealing can enjoy the parklands of Walpole and Lammas Park. Historic buildings in the area include the recently renovated St Mary’s Church dating back to the 12th century, Ealing Abbey (a fully functioning Benedictine monastery and school) and Pitzhanger Manor which was extensively redesigned by John Soane in the 1800s and now houses the Pitzhanger Gallery.

Today Ealing boasts a lively shopping centre with a regular Saturday farmers market. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars, plus cinemas and theatres, as well as numerous old pubs, many of which were reputedly popular with highwaymen.
