Greenwich and Lewisham
Situated on the South bank of the Thames, Greenwich is perhaps best known for its maritime history. The palace was the principle residence of Henry VII and encloses the park and the tower of the Royal Observatory. The meridian line passes through the Royal Greenwich Observatory which was where time measurements were officially taken, giving rise to Greenwich Mean Time ( GMT).
Today Greenwich is popular with visitors with attractions including the National Maritime Museum and the Queens House originally designed by Inigo Jones. Visitors can also see the remains of the Cutty Sark, which sadly suffered a fire in 2007. Greenwich boasts a range of trendy restaurants, bars and shops including extensive covered and outdoor markets.
Both Greenwich and Lewisham are easily reached from London Bridge or via the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and afford easy access to the O2 centre or Millennium Dome.
