By all accounts, 1980 was an interesting year in the UK.
Hercules the grizzly bear went on the run for 24 days to avoid starring in a Kleenex TV advert, a comedian named Russell Howard popped into the world and a little company called Thomson Directories Ltd was born.
One year later and the thomsonlocal Business Directory was already finding its way into over 22 million homes and businesses throughout the UK.
Fast forward to present day and thomsonlocal is a fully digital business directory and marketing service business, connecting millions of customers with local businesses each and every month.

The 1980’s and 90’s was the golden age for business directories like thomsonlocal
Back then, you couldn’t turn on the TV without seeing our mascot Ginger Tom rubbing shoulders with the likes of Cilla Black to promote our little blue book.
Fast forward to the age of the internet and the demand for printed directories was in decline. We knew that our future was in digital, but the transition from print was not going to be easy.
In 2013, after a difficult period of trading, thomsonlocal went into administration
Fortunately at the 11th hour part of the business was saved via a buyout from Corporate Media Partners Ltd and its subsidiaries, this was not without the unfortunate loss of over 170 jobs across the company.
This difficult time resulted in a necessary transition to a much leaner thomsonlocal, fully geared towards the modern world of digital advertising.
Today thomsonlocal is one of the biggest digital marketing agencies in the world, connecting tens of millions of customers and businesses each year.
